Local Foods Connection, in cooperation with Susan Jutz, is hosting a National Day of Service event at ZJ Farm in Solon this Sunday, January 18 at 10am.
LFC was contacted by the Presidential Inaugural Committee at the end of December and asked to host an inauguration weekend event. Since 1994, the United States has been celebrating a National Day Service on the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. This year, President-elect Barack Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden hope to extend this one-day commitment into an ongoing engagement to community service. Inauguration weekend will be filled with service activities throughout the country, offering Americans a chance to re-engage with their communities in a commitment to positive change.
As part of that effort, LFC will host a workday this Sunday, January 18 at ZJ Farm in Solon, Iowa. Volunteers will be working in a barn from 10am-2pm that day, doing chores to help prepare for spring planting. For example, volunteers will be cutting up plastic milk jugs to create mini-greenhouses which will be used to cover tender sprouts transferred from the hoophouse to the garden. Volunteers may also be helping with some clean-up in farm buildings. Volunteers should meet us at the farm at 10am Sunday morning. Though we will enjoy some shelter from the barn, please dress appropriately for cold weather and farm work.
If you are interested in joining us this Sunday and into the future, please visit our event listing at:
You can rsvp on that site as well as browsing all of the volunteer opportunities available across the country this weekend.
Thanks, in advance, for your support!
